Where should I hang a convex mirror?

These mirrors suit spaces where they can capture light from multiple angles, such as above a fireplace mantel or along a hallway. Their wide field of view helps brighten narrower rooms effectively. Ensure the wall structure securely supports the weight of the heavy wooden frame and glass plate.

How do I identify a Regency period mirror?

Regency examples typically exhibit precise classical detailing, often incorporating reeded frames, ball mouldings, or carved eagle crests. The proportions remain balanced and heavy. Later Victorian and twentieth-century revivals copy these classical forms but often employ different construction techniques and timber preparations.

What is the purpose of the ebonised slip?

The dark inner ring frames the curved glass and prevents the reflection from bleeding directly into the bright gold exterior. This contrast frames the image tightly. Cabinet makers used this technique to add depth and visual separation within the overall moulding design.

Are these mirrors heavy?

The combination of solid wood framing, gesso layers, and curved glass results in substantial overall weight. Proper wall fixings are essential for safe installation. Checking the fixing points on the back of the frame ensures secure placement against the wall.
