How do I identify a Georgian desk?

Georgian desks display architectural proportions, bracket feet, and characteristic bracket or ogee feet alongside solid brass swan-neck handles. The internal compartments feature fine dovetailing and secondary timbers specific to eighteenth-century workshop practices. Cabinetmakers of this period prioritised understated elegance and structural balance, often employing figured mahogany veneers without excessive ornamentation.

What is a partner's desk?

A partner's desk is a large pedestal workspace designed with drawers and cupboards on both sides so two people can sit opposite each other. These substantial pieces served estate offices and large libraries. They represent some of the most complex furniture forms from the nineteenth century, requiring finished panelling on every exterior surface.

Are the leather tops original?

Many nineteenth-century writing tables retain their original tooled leather inserts, though heavily used surfaces frequently underwent replacement during subsequent restorations. Surviving original leather often exhibits period patination and gilt tooling. Examination of the surrounding mahogany rebate helps determine whether a leather writing surface has been renewed or remains undisturbed from manufacture.

How do I care for mahogany furniture?

Mahogany requires stable environmental conditions away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the timber and veneers from drying out. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface. Applying traditional wax polish sparingly nourishes the grain and maintains the deep colour without building up heavy chemical residues.
