How were campaign trunks used?

Military campaign trunks served as portable wardrobes and desks for officers on active service. They were designed to withstand rough handling during long marches and sea voyages. Their robust construction and fitted interiors allowed officers to transport uniforms, maps and personal possessions securely across the globe.

Why use camphor wood for chests?

Camphor wood naturally repels insects, making it the preferred material for storing textiles, woollens and garments over long periods. The timber releases a distinct aromatic scent that protects stored contents from moths and dampness without the need for chemical treatments.

How do I date a wooden coffer?

Dating relies on observing construction methods, tool marks, timber species and hardware styles. Early coffers often feature hand-sawn boards and pegged joinery. Later Victorian and Edwardian examples incorporate machine-cut elements, standardised brass fittings and different locking mechanisms that reflect industrial manufacturing shifts.

Where should I place a storage trunk at home?

Storage trunks function well as coffee tables in living spaces, blanket storage at the foot of a bed, or hallway seating. Their flat lids provide useful surface area. Positioning them away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight protects the antique wood and preserves the original finish.
