How do I hang a heavy framed painting?

Secure fixings directly into wall studs or use appropriate heavy-duty wall anchors rated for the weight of the wood and glass. Ensure the hanging wire or brackets match the substantial build of the period surround. Position the centre of the work at standard eye level to create a balanced focal point in the room.

What periods do these paintings cover?

The works span multiple centuries, starting from late seventeenth-century vistas up to mid twentieth-century expressions. Victorian and Edwardian examples appear frequently alongside earlier Georgian pieces. Each era brings distinct framing styles and painting techniques suited to its respective decade.

How should I clean the glass and frame?

Dust the wood surround gently with a dry, soft cloth to protect any ebonised or gilt finishes. Avoid harsh chemical cleaners that might strip the historic surface. Apply glass cleaner to a cloth rather than directly to the glass to prevent moisture seeping behind the frame edge.

Are these works painted on canvas or paper?

The selection includes both oil paintings on canvas and watercolours or gouaches executed on paper. Canvas works offer textured, layered brushwork while paper works deliver fine linear detail. Works on paper typically require protective glass glazing within their dark surrounds.
