Satinwood is a dense tropical hardwood celebrated for its pale, golden colour and reflective, chatoyant grain that catches the light. Cabinet makers valued it for high-status furniture, using veneers to cover carcase timbers and creating luminous surfaces.

Where were these cupboards used?

These pieces served multiple domestic spaces, functioning as bedside commodes in master bedrooms or decorative side cabinets in reception rooms. Larger variations also acted as wardrobes and linen presses within grand Victorian and Edwardian homes.

How do I date a piece?

Dating relies on observing stylistic markers, construction methods, and the specific revival periods represented in the design. For instance, Edwardian pieces often incorporate hand-painted details, while eighteenth-century Sheraton examples favour precise geometric timber inlay.

How do I care for satinwood?

Maintenance requires keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and excessive heat to prevent the delicate veneers from drying out. Regular dusting with a soft, dry cloth preserves the polished surface without the need for heavy chemical polishes.
