How do I fit a modern mattress?

Most antique metal double beds accommodate standard modern mattress sizes, though exact dimensions can vary slightly in older pieces. Checking the internal length and width between the side rails ensures a proper fit. Adding modern wooden slats or a low-profile base inside the iron frame provides the necessary support for contemporary mattresses. This preserves the original structure while ensuring comfortable daily use.

Are these beds easy to assemble?

These beds typically dismantle into four main components: the headboard, the footboard, and two side rails. The rails usually slot directly into the vertical posts without requiring complex tools. Two people make assembly straightforward by slotting the side rails firmly into place to square the frame. Checking that the castors rest evenly on the floor completes the setup.

How do I clean brass and iron?

Painted iron surfaces require only gentle dusting and occasional wiping with a soft, dry cloth to remove accumulated debris. Avoiding harsh chemical cleaners preserves the original painted finishes. Brass components benefit from careful polishing with a suitable metal cleaner applied sparingly with a cloth. Preventing polish from contacting adjacent iron or painted surfaces keeps the entire bedstead looking well maintained.

Did these beds come in different sizes?

Makers produced these frames in various dimensions, ranging from small double sizes and standard doubles up to king size proportions. Some regional variants, such as Irish or Celtic styles, featured specific sizing conventions. Reviewing the listed dimensions for each bed ensures it matches the available bedroom space. The proportion of headboards to footboards varied depending on whether the design included a low foot end or an equal-height configuration.
