How were these desk ornaments used?

Owners placed them on writing tables as decorative focal points, or utilised specific variants like inkwells and figural paperweights to hold stationery and manage loose papers. They served both practical needs in study rooms and aesthetic functions in formal drawing rooms.

How do I distinguish bronze from spelter?

Bronze exhibits greater weight, a resonant sound when tapped gently, and a warm undertone beneath the dark patination. Spelter feels lighter in the hand and can show a greyish metal underneath worn areas. Foundries used spelter as a less expensive alternative for decorative figures from the mid-nineteenth century onward.

Where should I place an onyx base piece?

These sculptures require stable surfaces away from direct moisture and extreme temperature fluctuations to protect the integrity of the stone plinths. Displaying them on flat wooden desks or cabinet tops allows the combined weight of the metal and stone to anchor the piece securely.
