What is an antique chinoiserie cabinet?

An antique chinoiserie cabinet is a storage piece adorned with lacquer and painted motifs inspired by East Asian art. These items include corner cupboards, display cabinets, and marriage chests. Such furniture dates from the eighteenth century through to the early twentieth century, encompassing both European revival styles and pieces made in China.

How do I identify the period of a cabinet?

Dating relies on construction methods, hardware, and stylistic traits associated with periods like the Georgian era or the Edwardian revival. Wood types and lacquer techniques also offer clues to age. Design shifts from eighteenth-century japanned pieces to nineteenth-century bamboo frames and early twentieth-century cocktail cabinets help establish the decade of production.

Where were these cabinets placed in a home?

These cabinets served as focal points in reception rooms, drawing rooms, and dining spaces where guests could admire the decorative surfaces. Corner cupboards made efficient use of difficult room angles. Display cabinets and bureau bookcases housed valued objects and writing materials while adding colour and pattern to the interior.

How do I care for lacquer surfaces?

Lacquer requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth to prevent surface scratching. Avoid placing these cabinets in direct sunlight or near heat sources to protect the finish. Maintaining a stable room temperature prevents the underlying wood from expanding, which protects the painted decoration from cracking over time.
