Description

This late 19th-century British portrait study depicts a lady wearing a black hat with a veil. It’s an intriguing little mystery.

With an enigmatic expression, she peers back across the decades - captured in pencil and watercolour over a century ago. Given the dark veil, she’s possibly in mourning, her gentle eyes alluding to a story. Yet her dress appears more colourful, so it’s not entirely obvious.

The work is unsigned but it’s most probably a study, perhaps by an amateur artist rather than a student. There’s a sensitivity, which suggests they know each other.

What can you see in her eyes?

Held within a later frame.

Medium: Watercolour

Overall size: 14” x 15” / 35cm x 39cm

Year of creation: c. 1890

Condition: Artwork presents well. Minor areas of discolouration. Frame with some light wear.

Date of Manufacture

Brave Fine Art has dated this Antique Portrait Watercolour Painting to the 1890s.

The British School of this period is characterised by a focus on realism, tonal subtlety, and often depicts subjects in domestic or intimate settings with expressive brushwork.

These works typically utilise watercolour pigments on heavy-weight rag paper or vellum, often mounted with card borders and housed in gilded wood frames with protective glass.

Authentication relies on examining the paper type for age-related toning, inspecting the backboards and framing methods, and looking for period-appropriate pigments and artist signatures or studio stamps.

Antique watercolours add historic depth and character when hung alongside contemporary art in gallery walls or placed on narrow wall spaces to create intimate focal points.

To prevent fading and degradation, keep watercolour paintings away from direct sunlight, maintain stable humidity levels, and ensure they are framed using acid-free materials.
