FAQs

Victorian furniture encompasses styles produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901), characterised by a revival of historicism, robust proportions, and high-quality craftsmanship using dense timbers such as mahogany, walnut, and oak.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid timbers with mahogany or walnut veneers applied to secondary woods like pine or oak. Drawers frequently feature hand-cut dovetail joints, solid wood linings, and turned wooden knobs.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction characteristics, including hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, hand-turned wooden components, and historical brass or turned wood hardware without modern fixings.

An antique mahogany chest of drawers provides rich warmth and textural contrast in modern settings; pair it with minimalist contemporary art, neutral walls, or clean-lined seating to balance historical weight with a fresh aesthetic.

Preserve antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking and veneer lifting. Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply occasional high-quality beeswax to nourish the finish.
