FAQs

Victorian washstands were essential bedroom furnishings produced during the 19th century, designed to hold washing basins, pitchers, and toiletries before plumbed indoor bathrooms became standard.

Cabinet makers typically utilised solid timber framing such as mahogany, oak, or pine, often incorporating burl veneers, marble tops, and ceramic tile splashbacks to protect walls from water damage.

Authentic pieces exhibit period joinery techniques like hand-cut dovetails, timber shrinkage consistent with age, original brass or wooden hardware, and secondary woods typical of 19th-century workshop practices.

A washstand functions effectively as a hallway console, a bathroom vanity conversion, or a character-filled side cabinet in a living space, juxtaposing historical craftsmanship with modern decor.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting, and treat the timber periodically with traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
