Description

Here is a large and imposing watercolour - ‘Trawlers off Spithead’ by William Henry Pearson, inscribed, signed and dated 1909, and presented in its original gilt frame.

The picture measures 89cm by 43cm framed with the image measuring 71cm by x 25cm, and depicts four fishing smacks out at sea off the coast of Spithead in the Solent. The pictures evokes a real sense of movement and the elements, with the four boats on a choppy turquoise swell, chased by seagulls for their catch - you can almost feel the salt spray in the air.

William Pearson is best known for his seascapes and sailing ship paintings, he was a prolific maritime artist and his works have been sold extensively by the major auction houses.

The painting is in good original condition, with some minor losses and wear to the frame commensurate with its age, but these are barely visible when displayed, please see photographs.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information to photographs.

I offer free delivery to mainland UK, and am happy to provide quotes for shipping broad.

Nineteenth-century British marine watercolours typically focus on coastal scenes, naval vessels, and fishing craft, capturing atmospheric weather conditions and maritime activity with precise washes and delicate pigment layering.

Artists of this era typically utilized transparent watercolours on heavy-weight handmade rag paper, often incorporating gum arabic for depth and highlights created by lifting pigment or applying bodycolour.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the paper stock for watermarks, inspecting the medium for period-appropriate pigment chemistry, and checking the framing components, backing boards, and signature characteristics.

This piece works well hung against muted neutral wall colours or dark, moody tones to emphasise the gilt frame, complementing both traditional period rooms and transitional spaces.

Watercolours should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, kept in stable humidity-controlled environments, and framed using acid-free conservation mats.
