A netsuke is a small carved toggle traditionally used in Edo period Japan to secure small containers called inro or pouches to the traditional sash or obi of a kimono.

Netsuke were traditionally crafted from organic materials such as boxwood, ivory, stag antler, and rootwood, meticulously hand-carved with fine chisels and polished to highlight the natural grain.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural patina, wear patterns consistent with age, hollowed undersides featuring characteristic cord holes known as himotoshi, and often bear artisan signatures or school marks.

These miniature sculptures serve as exquisite cabinet curiosities or desktop centrepieces, best displayed under focused lighting within glass cloches or curated shelf displays to appreciate their intricate detail.

Preserve wooden carvings by maintaining stable relative humidity, keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, and dusting gently with a soft, dry brush without applying chemical polishes.
