First Period Worcester, produced between 1751 and 1783 under the founding management of Dr John Wall, is renowned for its fine soft-paste porcelain body, intricate hand-painted decoration, and pioneering transfer-printing techniques.

These pieces were crafted from a soft-paste porcelain mixture containing glass frit and soapstone, allowing them to withstand thermal shock better than earlier English soft-paste bodies. The distinctive blue scale pattern was meticulously applied by hand using a scale-like motif, often framing reserves containing polychrome flowers.

Authenticity is typically verified by examining the body under UV light to check for the characteristic greenish or bluish glow of soft-paste porcelain, inspecting the underglaze blue square fret marks or crescent marks, and looking for signs of genuine wear, fine crazing, and hand-painted brushwork rather than modern transfer printing.

Antique ceramics add layers of history and texture when displayed in glazed cabinets, curated open shelving, or used as single focal points on side tables within contemporary or classic settings.

Antique porcelain should always be washed by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-ionic detergent, avoiding ultrasonic cleaners, dishwashers, and harsh scrubbing that could damage the overglaze gilding and enamels.
