FAQs

Nineteenth-century British watercolour painting is characterised by meticulous detail, delicate washes of transparent pigment, and a focus on landscape, architectural, or narrative genre scenes depicting everyday life.

Artists traditionally used gum arabic-based watercolours applied to heavy rag paper or card stock, often incorporating pencil underdrawing, gum highlights, and occasionally opaque bodycolour.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit genuine paper ageing, visible artist brushwork under magnification, period framing techniques, and artist signatures or inscriptions rather than modern dot-matrix printing patterns.

Framed antique watercolours can be styled on gallery walls, above mantelpieces, or on narrow wall spaces to add historical depth, narrative charm, and understated colour to neutral or traditional rooms.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free museum-grade mats, UV-filtering glazing, and hanging away from direct sunlight and high humidity environments to prevent fading and paper degradation.
