Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1910s:
Hand-painted Gothic script: typical French kitchen lettering of the early twentieth century.
Blue marbled enamel glaze: standard finish for domestic French hollow-ware of the period.
Moulded ribs and vertical flutes: pressed sheet-metal work typical of early factories.
Wear to the rims: chipping exposing naturally oxidised dark iron beneath.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This set of three French enamel kitchen canisters, dating from 1910, embodies a traditional French Country style with a rustic farmhouse design vibe. Each cylindrical iron canister features a white and blue marbled enamel finish, complemented by contrasting black Gothic lettering that reads Cafe, Sucre, and Chicoree, alongside domed lids topped with small round knobs. Visible signs of age include chipped enamel along the rims of the lids and bodies, highlighting their vintage character and history of practical use. Measuring 19 cm high, 12.5 cm wide, and 12.5 cm deep, these canisters offer compact storage for dry goods. They sit neatly on a kitchen island, shelf, or countertop, serving both a functional storage purpose and as a decorative accent in a rustic interior.

FAQs

Popularised in late nineteenth and early twentieth-century France, enamel canisters were durable kitchen containers used for storing dry food supplies such as coffee, sugar, and chicory.

These items were produced from stamped sheet iron or steel, coated with powdered glass vitreous enamel, and fired at high temperatures to create a smooth, hygienic finish.

Authentic pieces feature French typography for common kitchen ingredients, hand-applied transfer designs or stencilling, heavy metal bases, and natural edge wear at high-friction areas.

Group the canisters together on an open shelf, dresser top, or kitchen island to create an organised accent in rustic or contemporary kitchens.

Clean gently by hand using warm water and mild dish soap, avoiding abrasive pads or caustic detergents that can dull the surface gloss or encourage oxidisation on exposed metal.
