Toby jugs emerged in England during the late 18th century, traditionally depicting a seated, stout character holding a mug of beer and a pipe, often wearing 18th-century attire including a tricorn hat.

These pieces are typically crafted from earthenware or pottery, hand-painted with coloured glazes over a white slip, and fired in traditional kilns.

Authentication relies on examining the crazing in the glaze, the weight and type of the clay body, hand-painted brushwork inconsistencies, and historical wear patterns on the base.

They work well as focal points on open shelving, mantelpieces, or within curated cabinet displays, adding historical character and a touch of traditional British eccentricity to a room.

Keep them out of direct sunlight to prevent glaze fading, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid submerging in water or using harsh chemical cleaning agents.
