The Louis XV style, emerging in France during the 18th century, is characterised by asymetrical curves, organic motifs, and a departure from the heavy symmetry of earlier periods, prioritising comfort and elegance.

Traditional commodes are constructed using solid hardwoods like oak or walnut, often featuring dovetail joinery in the drawer construction and hand-carved decorative elements assembled with traditional animal glues.

Authenticity is identified through construction details such as hand-cut dovetails, tool marks on the timber, historical wear patterns, original brass hardware, and the absence of modern machine fasteners.

A classic commode can be paired with contemporary art, minimalist lighting, or neutral textiles to create a balanced focal point that bridges traditional craftsmanship with modern design aesthetics.

Preservation involves keeping the timber away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking, dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood.
