Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Bevelled mirror plates: thick glass typical of late nineteenth-century cabinet making.
Hand-cut dovetails on drawer linings: traditional cabinet construction before mechanised cutting.
Cast brass mounts: Empire revival classical figures with natural oxidisation in the recesses.
Flame mahogany veneers: rich grain with an established shellac polish.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The imposing castellated top contains a central bevel-edged mirror flanked by applied square columns, ormolu-framed side panels with neoclassical appliques of women in classical costume, and spherical finials. A full-width shelf rests on shaped wooden brackets above three lower bevel-edged mirrors. The lower section includes a polished top surface, one long and two short frieze drawers fitted with circular ormolu pulls, a three-panelled base with further ormolu decoration, and classical column supports on the front. These columns join a sledge base raised on turned feet. The piece measures 240 cm high, 170 cm wide, and 54.5 cm deep. Such a grand furnishing suits a spacious hallway, drawing room, or dining room, providing surface display space, mirrored reflection, and integrated storage.

FAQs

Originating in the early nineteenth century during Napoleon Bonapartes reign, French Empire furniture is characterised by classical Greco-Roman proportions, architectural symmetry, and polished dark woods accented with gilded bronze mounts.

Craftsmen primarily utilised flame mahogany, Cuban mahogany, and walnut veneers paired with cast brass or ormolu gilded bronze mounts, glass mirrors, and solid timber frameworks.

Authentic Empire pieces feature neoclassical bronze mounts depicting laurels, sphinxes, or classical figures, hand-dovetailed joinery, and architectural frameworks built with solid mahogany or rich wood veneers.

Position the piece in a hallway or dining room, paired with simple lighting or neutral wall finishes to allow the mahogany grain and polished brass ornamentation to serve as the visual anchor.

Dust regularly with a dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly to the timber surface while keeping brass ornamentation clean with a soft brush to prevent polish build-up on original patinated gilding.
