British watercolour painting developed significantly during the 18th and 19th centuries, evolving from topographical illustration into a sophisticated and expressive fine art medium celebrated for its luminosity and atmospheric qualities.

Traditional watercolours utilise gum arabic as a binder mixed with finely ground natural pigments, applied to handmade rag paper or watercolour boards using sable or hog-hair brushes.

Authenticity is assessed by examining paper watermarks, the composition of the pigments, signs of natural ageing such as foxing or acid migration, and the presence of period framing techniques.

An antique watercolour adds historic depth to modern interiors when framed with conservation-grade materials and hung in spaces with controlled lighting, away from direct sunlight.

Preservation requires archival framing using acid-free mounts and UV-protective glass, alongside maintaining stable humidity and temperature levels to prevent paper degradation and fading.
