Description

Large, Fine 1840 French Oil Portrait Painting By René Cadeau (1782–1858)

Brief Description:

This is a magnificent and beautifully executed early 19th-century French oil on canvas portrait painting, by the French artist René Cadeau (1782–1858).

This distinguished original work depicts an elegantly dressed gentleman seated in a refined interior, wearing a traditional black frock coat, waistcoat and cravat over a crisp white shirt.

The sitter is portrayed holding a leather-bound book, with one hand resting naturally upon his lap, conveying an air of quiet confidence, intelligence and respectability.

The artist's accomplished handling of the gentleman's facial features is particularly impressive, capturing his gentle expression and engaging gaze with remarkable sensitivity and realism.

Beautifully painted in a restrained palette of rich blacks, subtle greys and muted green tones, the composition is characteristic of the elegant French portraiture of the period.

The painting is signed Cadeau and dated 1840 in the lower left-hand corner.

It is presented within a superb-quality, later giltwood and ebonised frame, featuring finely carved decorative mouldings and a handsome, deeply recessed profile. The frame beautifully complements the painting and adds considerably to its overall presentation.

A wonderful and highly decorative original 19th-century portrait, possessing considerable period character, artistic quality and historical appeal.
