FAQs

Italianate pastoral painting developed during the 17th century, featuring idealised rural country scenes lit by warm Mediterranean light, often incorporating farm animals, peasants, and rustic architecture.

Artworks of this era were typically executed in oil or gouache on canvas, wood panel, or rag paper, and housed in hand-carved wood frames finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authenticity is assessed through brushwork style, pigments, wood or paper composition, structural craquelure, and period-appropriate framing techniques.

Hang the artwork above a sideboard or mantelpiece alongside muted, warm neutral tones to create a focal point that bridges classic art with contemporary decor.

Gouache paintings on paper should be framed under UV-filtering glass with non-acidic mats, kept away from direct sunlight, and displayed in stable humidity levels to avoid pigment fading or paper warping.
