Pareglio & Ayres Antiques Interiors has dated this Victorian Watercolour Portrait Painting to the 1850s.
He wears a black double-breasted frock coat, a black silk stock over a high white collar, and a white handkerchief in his breast pocket. His fair, swept-back hair and mutton-chop whiskers are carefully rendered in fine stipple work, against a soft, graduated blue-grey background.

A handwritten note on the backing identifies the sitter as Augustus George Guy of Raymond Buildings, Gray’s Inn, and St John’s Wood, London, solicitor. It records that he married Frances Sarah, eldest daughter of the late Revd Thomas Gibbs, M.A., of Ashbourne, Derbyshire, on 18 April 1854. He died in 1857, aged thirty, at St Leonards-on-Sea. He was the father of Mrs Augusta Musgrave Lidderdale, wife of Dr James Lidderdale of Cleevelands, Prestbury, Gloucestershire.
Held under glass in a slim gilt frame.
