Georgian Chippendale Period Mahogany Chest of Drawers with Brush Slide

18th century
Description

A Georgian mahogany chest of drawers from the Chippendale period, dating to circa 1750–1780, standing on bracket feet and fitted with brass handles in the Rococo manner.

The chest is arranged with four graduated drawers, each increasing in size towards the base, and has developed a good natural patina throughout. It is a classic example of traditional British Georgian furniture, with restrained proportions and practical storage.

A particularly interesting feature is the pull-out brushing slide positioned above the drawers. These slides were designed as a temporary working surface and were commonly used while dressing, particularly for laying out clothing, brushes or personal items. When not required, the slide could be pushed neatly back into the chest.

Chests of drawers fitted with a brushing slide are less commonly encountered than standard Georgian chests, making this a particularly useful and interesting variation on the traditional form.

This Georgian Chippendale period chest of drawers stands on sturdy bracket feet and displays a rich dark brown timber colour with a natural patina across its surfaces. The solid mahogany case holds four graduated long drawers, complemented by ornamental pierced brass escutcheons and swan-neck brass handles in the Rococo manner, alongside a functional pull-out brushing slide positioned just beneath the top. The clean rectilinear mouldings of the top edge frame the piece, which measures 79.7 cm high, 83.6 cm wide, and 49.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this practical item fits seamlessly into a bedroom, hallway, or living space as a traditional storage unit. The top surface supports lamps, decorative bowls, or everyday accessories, while the graduated drawers accommodate clothing, linens, or paperwork. The sliding shelf provides an extendable temporary surface for dressing or organizing personal items before pushing neatly back into the flush cabinetry when not in use.

Originating in the mid-to-late 18th century, Chippendale period furniture is characterised by solid mahogany construction, classical proportions, bracket feet, and brass swan-neck handles, often incorporating features such as pull-out brushing slides.

The primary exterior wood was dense mahogany, valued for its grain and rich colour, complemented by solid brass handles and escutcheons. Secondary woods for internal drawer lining typically included pine or oak.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints, cast brass hardware with appropriate surface oxidisation, hand-planed back panels, and natural wear patterns consistent with age around drawer runners.

A classic mahogany chest functions well in modern schemes when paired with contemporary artwork, understated brass lighting, or neutral wall finishes to contrast the warm tones of the timber.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a quality natural beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year, ensuring the piece is kept clear of direct heat sources and moisture.
