This nineteenth-century English four poster bed is a grand late Regency piece created from pine, timber, gesso, and water-gilded details. It has a magnificent rectangular canopy cornice featuring a continuous arrangement of deeply carved scrolling acanthus leaves and dramatic sweeping corners. The front posts are reeded with carved gilded foliate collars, banding, and raised panels to the base, finished in a combination of gold and white paint. The back posts have a restrained painted gesso finish, and the frame includes a wooden slat base. The bed functions as a striking sleeping structure for a principal bedroom, providing a focal point in a large interior space. The maximum cornice dimensions are 261.5 cm high, 205.75 cm wide, and 231 cm deep, with a mattress base width of 172.75 cm and a depth of 207 cm. The original burnished water gilding remains intact on the structure.

FAQs

Regency four poster beds are characterised by classical architectural proportions, delicate turning, and ornate decorative elements inspired by Greco-Roman motifs such as acanthus leaves and reeding.

These beds were constructed using softwoods or hardwoods carved with decorative details, coated in layers of chalky gesso, and finished with thin gold leaf water-gilded onto the surface.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery marks, natural age-related craquelure or wear to the gesso substrate, and hand-cut structural frame fixings.

Pair the statement bed frame with neutral walls, contemporary crisp white linens, and minimalistic secondary furniture to allow the structural carved elements to remain the central focal point.

Dust gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths which can easily lift or dissolve the delicate gilding and underlying gesso.
