1950s Smiths Pocket Watch, Made in England

1940 - 1960
Description

1950s Smiths pocket watch, made in England.

The watch has a 15-jewel stem-winding movement, stamped Made in England, which is working nicely.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case was made by the English case manufacturer Dennison, and it is stamped inside with the name Cuprel. The name is derived from cupronickel, an alloy primarily made of copper blended with nickel, giving the metal a brilliant, bright silver, stainless-look finish. The case is in good condition, just a slight indentation to the back.

The acrylic lens is in good condition.

The dial is in its original painted finish with blued steel hands, a subsidiary seconds dial and outer minute track. The dial is creamier in colour in real life but the camera is struggling to pick it up.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

Date of Manufacture

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1950s:
Movement stamped Made in England with 15 jewels: post-war Cheltenham factory production.
Dennison Cuprel case stamp: Birmingham casemaker working throughout the mid-twentieth century.
Heat-blued steel hands over printed Roman dial: standard Smiths styling of the decade.
Fine surface handling scratches on the case: typical honest pocket wear.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Smiths was a prominent British manufacturer producing clocks, watches, and automotive instruments throughout the twentieth century. During the 1950s, the company produced affordable, reliable mechanical pocket watches in Great Britain, catering to everyday timekeeping needs.

Pocket watches from this era commonly featured chrome-plated brass or nickel casings housing manual-wind mechanical movements. Dials were typically made from printed metal or acrylic with glass or perspex crystals covering the watch face.

Authentic pieces feature clear brand markings on the dial, such as SMITHS and MADE IN ENGLAND printed at the lower dial perimeter. Movement stamps inside the case back further confirm production origin and calibre type.

Vintage pocket watches are frequently displayed under glass cloches, placed on dedicated pocket watch stands, or incorporated into desktop vignette arrangements alongside leather-bound books and brass instruments.

Mechanical pocket watches should be kept away from water, high humidity, and strong magnetic fields. Periodic servicing by a qualified horologist ensures proper lubrication of movement components and prolongs operational life.
