This pair of Georgian reverse glass prints depicts female figures representing the allegorical seasonal subjects of Autumn and Winter. The works are mounted inside dark moulded wooden frames with textured gilt inner slips and green-tinted lower margins inscribed with the seasonal titles. Autumn shows a woman in a lace bonnet holding a fruit basket against an orchard backdrop, while Winter presents a figure in a dark hooded cloak holding a fur muff alongside a snowy ice-skating scene. The materials comprise glass, painted paper, and timber. Each piece measures 47 cm high and 36.25 cm wide. These framed works suit hanging in a narrow wall space within an English country house interior, such as a traditional hallway, study, or drawing room. They add a historical decorative touch to period-style domestic spaces and work well arranged side by side or displayed symmetrically flanking a doorway or fireplace mantelpiece.

Reverse glass prints, popular in the 18th century, involve adhering a paper engraving or mezzotint to glass, making the paper translucent with oil, and applying colours by hand onto the reverse side.

Craftspeople transferred a printed paper image onto glass using varnish, scraped away the paper backing leaving only the inked impression, and then applied layers of paint directly onto the glass back.

Authentic pieces typically feature period-appropriate moulded frames, subtle irregularities in hand-blown cylinder glass, and natural age-related craquelure or paint shrinkage on the reverse.

Display these works as a symmetrical pair in a hallway, above a console table, or alongside contemporary line drawings to create a textured gallery wall.

Keep them away from direct sunlight and damp environments to prevent paint flaking, and dust the front glass gently with a dry microfibre cloth without applying liquid cleaners to the back.
