Gents Jumbo Tissot Wrist Watch, 1950

1940 - 1960
Description

Gents jumbo Tissot wrist watch, 1950.

The watch has a 15-jewel hand-winding movement, calibre 27, which is working nicely. The movement is signed and it also has the serial number 2,298,731 which dates it back to 1950.

The watch is a good wearable size at 37.5mm diameter excluding the winding crown and the lugs. The case is stainless steel and it is in super condition. The inside of the case back has the Tissot logo.

The lens is in lovely condition.

The signed dial has been professionally re-finished at some stage, in fact the whole watch looks as though it has been very nicely restored at some point.

The watch has a later black leather strap.

The watch comes in a new presentation box.

This mid-century gents wristwatch dates from 1950 and belongs to the gentleman's library style category. The item comprises a jumbo stainless steel case with a silver-coloured finish, a cream dial with black Arabic numerals, a sub-seconds subdial located at six o'clock, and a later black leather strap with stitched detailing and a silver-coloured metal buckle. The dial carries the signature Tissot text below the twelve o'clock position. The wristwatch has a 15-jewel hand-winding movement of calibre 27, featuring a signed mechanism and the serial number 2,298,731. The case back bears the Tissot logo on its interior surface, while a winding crown is positioned on the right side of the case. The timepiece measures 37.5 mm in diameter, excluding the crown and lugs. The piece is suitable for everyday wear or collection within a domestic setting, pairing with formal or casual attire. The restoration work includes a professionally re-finished dial and an overall refurbished appearance, complemented by a clean lens and an intact black leather strap. The watch functions via a hand-winding mechanism and is housed in a presentation box.

In 1950s watchmaking, standard mens wristwatches typically measured between 30mm and 33mm in diameter. Watches manufactured with case diameters measuring 35mm to 38mm were designated as jumbo or oversized models to denote their larger proportions.

Mid-20th-century wristwatches were commonly built using stainless steel or chrome-plated brass cases, acrylic crystals, brass or silver dials, and manual-wind mechanical movements. Straps were traditionally crafted from natural leather or fitted with expanding metal bracelets.

Authenticity is verified by matching the movement serial numbers and brand markings with period manufacturer records. Checking for age-consistent dial ageing, authentic brand typography, correct reference stamps inside the case back, and period-correct hand profiles ensures legitimacy.

A mid-century dress watch serves as a versatile sartorial accessory suitable for both formal tailoring and smart-casual wear. Its understated dial aesthetics complement modern minimalist menswear while offering distinct historical character.

Mechanical timepieces require periodic servicing by a horologist every three to five years to refresh synthetic oils. Keep the case isolated from water, extreme humidity, and strong magnetic fields to ensure continuous accurate timekeeping.
