Post-impressionist Oil on Canvas by Belgian Artist Henri Joseph Pauwels

1940 - 1960
For Sale by Earl and Rymer
Description

An impressive mid-century Post-Impressionist oil on canvas by listed Belgian artist Henri Joseph Pauwels (1903–1983). Known for his atmospheric marine and harbour landscapes, Pauwels captures a busy port scene - likely Ostend or Antwerp - dominated by a large steamship docked in calm waters.

Executed with dynamic, broad brushstrokes, the work contrasts the heavy, industrial form of the ship and dark plumes of smoke against a soft, light-filled sky. Pops of warm rust-orange along the ship’s hull and subtler pastel reflections in the water bring vitality and depth to the moody, tonal palette.

Condition: Canvas in good vintage condition. The frame has some losses to the paint on the slip and the top left mitre joint has some gapping. Depending on preference the painting could be hung as is or easily repaired, please get in touch to discuss options.

Henri Joseph Pauwels (Belgian, 1903–1983) (and routinely signing as H. J. Pauwels) was a celebrated 20th-century Belgian Post-Impressionist painter best known for his luminous marine scenes, bustling harbour views, and atmospheric landscapes.

Born in East Flanders in December 1903, Pauwels developed an early affinity for outdoor, en plein air painting. Like many prominent Flemish artists of his generation, he traveled to Paris for formal academic training. There, he immersed himself in the techniques of French Impressionism—mastering the fluid handling of light, soft pastel tonalities, and expressive, gestural brushwork that defined his mature style.

Upon returning to Belgium, Pauwels established a studio in Antwerp and spent decades capturing the vibrant maritime life of the Low Countries. He became particularly renowned for his views of the busy docks of Antwerp and Ostend, where he captured heavy steamships, tugboats, cargo vessels, and harbor workers against moody, light-filled skies.

Beyond maritime subjects, his versatile repertoire included sun-dappled garden scenes, floral still lifes, and rural Flemish landscapes. His ability to contrast industrial grandeur with painterly sensitivity—balancing heavy forms against soft ambient light—made his work highly sought after across Europe during both the pre- and post-WWII eras.

Throughout his active career, Pauwels exhibited widely in major European art hubs, including solo and group shows in Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam.

Today, his paintings are held in private collections worldwide as well as public institutions, including the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent (Musée de Beaux-Arts de Gand), cementing his legacy as a key figure in 20th-century Belgian Post-Impressionist landscape painting.

This post-impressionist oil painting on canvas by Belgian artist Henri Joseph Pauwels dates from 1950. Executed in a post-impressionist style using oil paint on canvas and set within a carved wood frame, the artwork employs a muted grey and ochre palette with warm rust-orange accents on the steamship hull, dark plumes of smoke, and impasto technique. The piece measures 79 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. The frame has losses to the paint on the slip and some gapping at the top left mitre joint. The artwork works well in a coastal retreat interior and suits placement above a sideboard in a living room, dining room, or hallway. The scene depicts a busy harbour with steamships, figures on the shore, and calm water under a soft, light-filled sky. The visible signature of the artist appears in the lower right corner of the canvas.

Post-Impressionist maritime art is defined by expressive impasto brushwork, a focus on light and atmospheric conditions, and subject matter depicting working ports, steamships, and coastal landscapes.

Artists during this era predominantly painted with oil-based pigments on stretched linen or cotton canvas, typically housed in moulded wooden or composition frames.

Authentic pieces feature period-appropriate canvas weave, natural craquelure patterns, artist signatures rendered in the same pigment layer, and wooden stretcher bars showing age-related patination.

Nautical oil paintings work well when hung above a sideboard or mantelpiece, paired with modern neutral wall colours, contemporary lighting, and minimalist wooden furniture to balance the canvas texture.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and direct heat sources. Dust the frame and surface gently with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid cleaners.
