This pair of large Buddhist temple Singha guardian lion sculptures dates from the early 20th century in a Southeast Asian style. Each piece is cast in bronze with a dark brown finish and stands in a seated guardian posture with an open mouth showing fangs, a stylized flame mane, and an ornamental breastplate. Additional visible details include elaborate surface chasing across the chest, defined clawed paws, and rounded back legs. Each sculpture measures 59.5 cm high, 26.5 cm wide, and 29 cm deep. These statues are suitable for placement on top of a sideboard in a gentleman's library or a living area to bring a formal, decorative accent to an interior scheme.

Known as Singha, Chinthe, or Foo Dogs across various Southeast Asian and East Asian cultures, these stylized lions served as protective guardians placed at the entrances of temples and sacred structures to ward off negative influences.

Historically, bronze figures were created using the lost-wax casting technique, where molten bronze was poured into a hand-carved wax mould, allowing for intricate surface detailing in the mane and ornamental chest straps.

Authentic pieces generally display natural surface wear, casting seam imperfections, and a deep patina formed through gradual oxidisation rather than modern chemical distressing or uniform painted finishes.

These sculptural figures can be styled as focal points atop a large console table, flanking an entranceway, or positioned on a sideboard to create visual symmetry and textural contrast against clean, contemporary walls.

Dust regularly using a clean, soft-bristled brush or dry microfibre cloth, and avoid using harsh chemical cleaners; a light application of microcrystalline wax can be applied periodically to preserve the metal surface.
