1970 Bulova 23 Jewel Automatic Wristwatch

1940 - 1960
Description

A 1970 Bulova 23-jewel automatic wristwatch. A very well-presented dial of a crisp white colour, of an almost 'scientific' type design. The dial is quartered by a red-lined crosshair, splitting the quarters. The hours and minutes are indicated by thin black 'stick' hands, with a contrasting bright red seconds hand. Signed 'Bulova' beneath an applied gilt logo at 12 o'clock. Towards 6 o'clock, '23 Jewels Automatic' is shown, with 'T Swiss T' at the bottom section.

A well-presented gold-plated case, in beautifully aged condition. This particular watch formed part of a collection purchased by Kembery Watches and has been cosmetically untouched for an extensive period of time after being purchased by a noted collector. In this time, the case has developed a wonderful level of patina — seldom seen. Original Bulova winding crown. A stainless steel screw-down case back with Bulova date marks for 1970.

A 23-jewel Bulova automatic winding mechanism, with the stylistic detail of a 'B' within the automatic rotor. Serial numbers date this watch to 1970.

Case width 34mm

Case height 38mm

Case depth 11mm

This 1970 Bulova automatic wristwatch dates from the 1960s to 1970s Modernist period. The timepiece comprises a gold-plated metal cushion case measuring 34 mm in width, 38 mm in height, and 11 mm in depth, paired with a brown leather strap and a winding crown on the right side. The dial is white with black baton markers, a red central seconds hand, a red crosshair, an applied gilt logo, and black typography reading Bulova, Automatic, 23 Jewels, and T Swiss T. The case displays visible surface wear and patina from age. Wearers use this accessory on the wrist as a functional timepiece suited to a gentleman's library setting or everyday wear. The construction incorporates an acrylic crystal over the round-in-cushion face, contrasting against the textured grain of the brown leather band and the brushed finish of the gold-toned metal housing. The hands are slender black sticks accompanied by the vibrant red sweep hand, while the dial layout provides clear legibility with minute tracks along the outer perimeter.

Wristwatches from the 1970s frequently feature geometric case shapes, such as cushion or tonneau forms, bold dial markers, and self-winding mechanical movements that operate without a battery.

Timepieces from this period commonly utilised gold-plated or stainless steel cases, acrylic crystals, leather or metallic straps, and internal movement components crafted with synthetic jewel bearings to reduce friction.

Authentic vintage Bulova timepieces feature clear dial typography, correct logo placement, manufacturer markings on the case back, and date codes on the movement or case that correspond to the production decade.

A vintage gold automatic watch with a leather strap pairs effectively with structured tailoring, formal shirts, or smart casual knitwear, serving as a functional personal accessory.

Mechanical watches require periodic servicing by a qualified watchmaker every three to five years to clean the movement, replace lubricants, and inspect seals for moisture resistance.
