This 1920 apothecary-style chest of drawers is constructed from pine with a warm honey brown finish and displays a knotty grain. The rustic country piece is designed with a low, wide form measuring 61 cm high, 95 cm wide, and 45.5 cm deep, standing on a solid plinth base beneath an overhanging plank top. Nine multi-sized drawers are arranged in rows of four small, three medium, and two deep long drawers, each fitted with a dark-stained round turned wooden knob. Visible details include natural wood knots, dark circular pull handles, and a rectangular multi-drawer layout. In a modern home, it serves a practical purpose as a low chest of drawers, a sideboard, or a media unit in a bedroom, kitchen, hallway, or living room. The sturdy construction provides versatile storage options while maintaining a traditional farmhouse appearance suitable for rustic interiors.

FAQs

An apothecary chest of drawers is a storage unit featuring multiple small, individual drawers, historically used by pharmacists and shopkeepers to organise herbs, remedies, and small commodities. Over time, the style was adopted into domestic furniture for general storage.

Pieces from this era are typically constructed using solid pine or pine veneers, assembled with hand-cut or machine-cut dovetail joints on the drawer boxes. Turned wooden knobs, tongue-and-groove backboards, and plain plinth bases are common structural details.

Authentic pine pieces display natural wood grain variation, knot placement, and age-related wear such as minor indentations and natural surface oxidisation. Examination of internal drawer construction, dovetail proportions, and original fixings also provides evidence of period origin.

A pine apothecary chest functions well as a focal storage piece in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms. Balancing the warm timber tones with neutral wall paint, ceramics, or understated metal accents incorporates the piece effectively into contemporary schemes.

Pine furniture should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry cloth and treated periodically with a clear beeswax polish to protect the timber surface. Avoid placing the wood near direct heat sources or in damp environments to prevent warping and splitting.
