FAQs

Georgian chests of drawers typically feature symmetrical proportions, classical lines, and hand-cut dovetail joinery. Crafted primarily from timbers such as mahogany or walnut, they often exhibit bracket feet and distinctive brass hardware like oval or swan-neck handles.

18th-century cabinetmakers used solid or veneered mahogany, frequently employing flame mahogany for drawer fronts. Construction involved hand-cut oak or pine drawer linings, mortise and tenon frames, and hand-hammered brass backplates.

Authentic Georgian pieces display hand-sawn wood markings, irregular hand-cut dovetails, and genuine patination on the brassware. The interior linings usually reveal natural shrinkage cracks and period-appropriate pine or oak drawer bottoms with hand-planed edges.

A dark mahogany chest serves as a grounding focal piece in a hallway, living space, or bedroom. Contrast the rich wood tones with neutral wall palettes, contemporary ceramics, or modern abstract artwork positioned above the piece.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or fading. Preserve the original finish by applying beeswax lightly once or twice a year, polishing with a soft lint-free cloth along the natural grain.
