This Georgian chest of drawers dates from the eighteenth century and follows a classic English design. Made from mahogany with a warm brown timber colour and oak linings, the piece shows a deep patina across its polished surfaces. The tall structure incorporates a moulded edge to the top, four short upper drawers over four long graduated drawers below, and cockbeading around the drawer edges. Original large fretted brass swan-neck handles with brass escutcheons decorate the drawer fronts, while shaped ogee bracket feet support the base. Suitable for use in a bedroom or hallway, this storage item holds folded clothes or linens while adding traditional character to an interior.

Georgian chests of drawers are defined by classical proportions, high-quality timber such as Cuban mahogany, and symmetrical drawer configurations. Common characteristics include cockbeaded drawer borders, dovetail joinery, swan-neck brass handles, and bracket feet.

Primary timbers included solid mahogany and walnut veneers, while secondary woods used for drawer linings typically comprised pine, oak, or poplar. Hardware was primarily cast in brass, often featuring chased or simple openwork backplates.

Authentic pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, hand-planed back panels, and natural wear patterns on drawer runners. Look for historical oxidisation on the underside of timber surfaces and original cast brass fittings with period-appropriate thread work.

A dark mahogany chest provides grounding texture when placed against neutral wall tones or minimalist backdrops. Styling the top surface with contemporary ceramics, table lamps, or framed artwork creates a balanced contrast between period craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust regularly using a soft microfibre cloth following the wood grain. Protect the timber finish by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year, while avoiding direct sunlight, heat sources, and excessive moisture.
