Victorian Britannia Metal Hot Water Pot by Philip Ashberry & Sons – Dated 1861

19th century
For Sale by Kings-Lane
Description

An elegant mid-to-late Victorian hot water or coffee pot manufactured in Sheffield by the renowned silversmiths Philip Ashberry & Sons.

This piece features a beautifully stylized melon-panelled, bulbous lower body decorated with embossed acanthus leaf motifs. It stands proudly on four ornate organic cast feet and is fitted with a sweeping scrolled handle and an elegant gooseneck pouring spout.

The hinged dome lid remains securely attached and features its original, detailed flower-bud finial.

The base is explicitly stamped with the historical "Seated Britannia with Trident" trademark along with factory pattern markers (5 / 216 / 19). Crucially, the internal brass tightening nut inside the lid features the manufacturer's official legal registry mark: "PHILIP ASHBERRY & SONS • REGISTERED MAY • 18 • 1861 • SHEFFIELD", dating the design's patent exactly to 1861.

Presented in good antique condition, showing honest historical wear consistent with a 140+ year old piece.

This nineteenth-century hot water pot originates from the Victorian period and is manufactured in Sheffield by Philip Ashberry & Sons. The piece is formed from dark grey Britannia metal with a metallic finish and a hinged dome lid. It features an S-scroll handle, a gooseneck spout, and a floral bud finial. The lower body displays lobed leaf mouldings, and the whole vessel stands upon four cast feet. The base contains factory pattern markers and a stamped trademark, while the internal fastening carries a registered date mark for May 18 1861. The vessel measures 22 cm high and 19 cm wide. It is suited for placement on a dining table or sideboard top to serve hot water or coffee during meals.

Britannia metal is a pewter-like alloy composed primarily of tin, antimony, and copper, introduced in the late 18th century as a silvery, durable alternative to pewter for tableware.

These pots were produced via casting or metal spinning, featuring soldered spouts and handles often fitted with small bone or wood insulators to reduce heat conduction.

Authentic pieces generally carry stamped maker marks, design registration marks, or firm names on the underside, alongside characteristic seam lines and a dull grey aged surface.

Position the pot on a wooden sideboard, mantelpiece, or kitchen dresser alongside ceramic vessels to incorporate historical texture into a contemporary decorative arrangement.

Clean gently using warm water and mild soap with a microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical abrasive polishes that strip the natural dark surface patina.
