George III Mahogany Chest on Chest with Original Pierced Brasses, Circa 1770

18th century
Description

A good quality George III mahogany chest on chest, dating to circa 1760, of elegant proportions and rich original colour. Constructed in two sections, the upper chest features three small drawers over three graduated long drawers, standing upon a base fitted with three further long graduated drawers and retaining its original brushing slide.

The beautifully figured mahogany has developed a deep, warm patina over time, showcasing the quality of the timber and craftsmanship typical of the period. The piece retains its original pierced brass swan-neck handles and escutcheons, which complement the refined simplicity of the design and enhance its authenticity.

The fluted canted corners to the upper section add architectural interest, while the moulded cornice provides a strong yet balanced top line. The lower section stands on original shaped bracket feet, giving the chest a confident yet elegant stance.

Drawer linings are oak, with hand-cut dovetail joints typical of the late 18th century, confirming its Georgian origin. The brushing slide remains a particularly desirable feature, offering practical surface space while maintaining the clean lines of the design.

A highly practical and timeless piece of English Georgian furniture, ideal for a period townhouse, country house interior, or refined contemporary setting.

This George III period chest on chest is an 18th-century Georgian piece of furniture crafted from mahogany with brass hardware. The tall two-section case exhibits a warm brown colour, a moulded cornice above fluted canted corners, and a graduated drawer layout comprising three small top drawers over six long drawers, all fitted with original pierced brass swing handles and shaped escutcheons. Below the upper section sits a pull-out brushing slide, and the entire unit rests on shaped bracket feet. Measuring 180 cm high, 110 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the storage cabinet provides vertical capacity for clothing and linen. In a contemporary home, this traditional storage unit suits a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway as a statement chest of drawers. The piece functions effectively alongside period or modern furnishings while offering generous concealed storage and a level surface via the integrated pull-out slide.

A chest on chest, also referred to as a tallboy, is a vertical storage piece comprising two separate chest sections stacked atop one another. Popularised during the eighteenth century, the design allowed for maximum storage capacity while preserving floor space.

Primary construction utilised solid or veneered Cuban or West Indian mahogany for external surfaces. Secondary timbers, such as pine or oak, were employed for internal drawer linings and back panels, complemented by cast or pierced brass backplates and handles.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer construction, hand-sawn back boards, and natural shrinkage marks. Original brass hardware will show minor irregularities from hand-casting and hand-chasing, alongside period-correct keyholes and locks.

A tall chest on chest serves as a structural anchor in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway. Placing contemporary table lamps or modern artwork alongside dark mahogany creates a balanced contrast between traditional craftsmanship and clean modern lines.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax paste once or twice a year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, cracking, or fading of the patina.
