This Georgian architectural antique takes the form of an eighteenth-century lead water pump hopper and garden fountain head, produced in England between 1750 and 1770. Fashioned from solid lead with a dark grey finish, the piece displays visible signs of age including weathered surfaces and oxidation across the metal. The square plate features ornate relief-moulded scrollwork motifs along the lower section, paired with flanking floral rosettes near the upper corners and a prominent central cylindrical water spout projecting outward. Measuring 21.5 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 20 cm deep, the compact salvaged element serves as a decorative design accent for a garden water feature or wall installation in a traditional country house setting.

During the 18th century, lead fountain heads and pump hoppers served as functional components in domestic and estate plumbing systems, channeling water from pumps or roof drainage while displaying relief motifs.

These architectural elements were manufactured using sand-casting techniques, where molten lead was poured into decorative impressions in damp sand, resulting in heavy, durable structures with detailed surface patterns.

Authentic period lead items typically exhibit a distinct pale grey oxidisation layer, minor surface irregularities from hand-casting methods, and historical wear around the pipe joints rather than uniform modern seams.

These items are frequently incorporated into contemporary garden masonry as functional water features, mounted on interior lime-plaster walls as sculptural art, or positioned as decorative architectural accents.

Lead requires minimal maintenance, though periodic cleaning with soft bristle brushes and neutral water is recommended, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that strip the natural protective patina.
