This nineteenth-century Regency oil painting on board depicts a gentleman with dark hair, a white cravat, and a black coat with folded arms against a deep red background with visible impasto brushwork. The portrait is housed in a period giltwood frame featuring decorative moulded ornamentation with an aged finish, showing visible overpainting and a heavy varnish. The work measures 43 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 3 cm deep, presenting a compact proportion well suited for display in a gentleman's library or similar traditional interior. In a home today, it is placed above the mantelpiece as a focal point, bringing rich dark brown and gold tones to interior wall spaces.

FAQs

Regency portraiture, dating from the late eighteenth to early nineteenth century, typically features formal poses, dark backgrounds, and dramatic lighting to emphasize the sitters features and attire.

Paintings from this era were primarily executed using oil pigments mixed with natural drying oils on stretched flax canvas, presented inside gilded timber frames.

Authentic period works display natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, original hand-carved or molded plaster frame detailing, and aged wood stretchers on the reverse.

An antique oil painting can serve as a focal point above a fireplace or sideboard, or be integrated into an eclectic gallery wall alongside modern artwork.

Keep the canvas away from direct sunlight and heat sources, maintain stable relative humidity, clean gently with a soft dry brush, and consult a professional conservator for varnish restoration.
