Superb Pair of Oil Paintings by Theodore Jensen (1816-1894)

19th century
Description

A superb pair of oils on canvas by the artist Theodore Jensen (1816-1894). The pair beautifully depicted typically Victorian ladies as classical figures. The works are both fully signed and dated 1862. Theodore Jensen was born in 1816 and studied at the Dusseldorf Academy and exhibited in London between 1854 and 1864 mainly at The Royal Academy and the British Institution, he was a highly regarded portrait painter and painted both The Prince and Princess of Wales. Two of the works he exhibited at the British Institution had the titles ‘The Fair Fruit Gatherer’ and ‘A Bacchante’ and these are certainly those paintings. The pair are in excellent untouched condition and retain the original fine quality gilt frames. The frames have had some touching in etc. The paintings have the most wonderful decorative presence and are ready to hang.

This Victorian pair of 19th Century Classical oil paintings on canvas by Theodore Jensen depicts classical female figures in circular tondo apertures within square gilt frames. The works show ladies decorated with vine foliage, rendered with oil paint on canvas, set behind gilt plaster moulding inside gilded wood frames of rich gold colour. The original fine quality frames display corner decorative carvings, textured stippled grounds, and touch-ups on the timber surfaces. Each painting measures 73.5 cm high, 73.5 cm wide, and 8 cm deep, providing substantial scale for interior display. They suit placement above a sideboard in an English country house setting, bringing a sophisticated historical presence to a dining room or drawing room interior.

FAQs

Tondo paintings feature circular compositions set within square or rectangular frames, a format revived during the 19th century from Italian Renaissance traditions for allegorical and classical subjects.

Artists painted with oil pigments bound with drying oils on stretched linen canvas, which were mounted into carved timber or composition frames coated in gesso and gold leaf.

Authentic period paintings display uniform surface craquelure, natural oxidisation on the canvas reverse and wooden stretchers, alongside traditional gesso work on the surrounding gilding.

Hanging a symmetrical pair of gilt-framed paintings above a sideboard or console creates a focused display, offering visual contrast against contemporary wall colours and minimalist furniture.

Dust surfaces lightly using a soft camel-hair brush, keep artworks clear of direct sunlight and radiators, and consult a professional restorer for varnish removal or frame repair.
