Westerwald stoneware is a type of pottery produced in the Westerwald region of Germany from the 16th century onwards, characterised by its durable salt-glazed surface and cobalt blue decoration.

Common salt was thrown into the kiln during the high-temperature firing process, reacting with the silica in the clay body to form a durable, glossy, orange-peel texture.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-thrown irregularities, cobalt blue oxide highlights applied over incised or stamped motifs, and historical wear consistent with age.

These pieces function well as sculptural display objects on open shelving, sideboards, or mantels, contrasting effectively against modern minimalist backdrops.

Keep antique stoneware out of direct sunlight and clean only with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid immersion in water, especially if the piece has historic hairline fractures or repairs.
