Nineteenth-century French bronzes frequently utilised the lost-wax casting method and were produced in large numbers by commercial foundries in Paris, often drawing inspiration from classical mythology, pastoral themes, and Renaissance models.

These pieces were typically cast in copper alloy using either sand casting or lost-wax techniques, followed by hand-chasing of the surface details and the application of various chemical patinas to achieve specific colouration.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the depth and crispness of the chasing marks, the quality and stability of the patina, foundry marks or artist signatures, and the characteristics of the metal alloy underneath.

An antique bronze object adds texture and classical weight when placed on a minimalist mantelpiece, a dark wood bookcase, or an executive desk, providing a sophisticated contrast to modern clean lines.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry brush and occasionally treated with microcrystalline wax to protect the patina from moisture and handling oils, avoiding all abrasive cleaners.
