FAQs

Mid-20th century British landscape painting frequently captured idyllic rural scenes, pastoral life, and traditional architecture, often executed in a realist or impressionist manner using oil on canvas, board, or card.

Artists during the mid-20th century commonly utilised prepared millboard or thick artist card as a cost-effective and stable substrate, paired with traditional linseed oil paints and gilt wooden frames.

Authentication involves examining the artists signature for period-appropriate mediums, checking the back of the card or board for framing stamps, age-related oxidisation of the varnish, and the construction methods of the accompanying vintage frame.

A traditional landscape painting adds character and warmth to contemporary spaces when hung as a focal point on a neutral wall or layered on a mantelpiece to create a curated, eclectic contrast.

Oil paintings on card should be displayed away from direct sunlight and high humidity to prevent warping of the card and fading of the pigments, and cleaned gently with a dry, soft microfibre brush.
