FAQs

Meiji period bronze sculptures refer to metalwork pieces created in Japan between 1868 and 1912, a time when Japanese artisans achieved international renown for their mastery of lost-wax casting and intricate surface patination.

These pieces were typically crafted using traditional lost-wax casting methods, employing high-grade copper and bronze alloys, followed by meticulous hand-chasing and the application of chemical patinas to achieve rich tonal depths.

Authentic pieces often feature finely detailed fur or muscle textures achieved through hand-chiselling, artist signatures or foundry seals cast into the base, and a natural patination that develops over decades of ageing.

A bronze sculpture serves as a sophisticated focal point when placed on a dark wood mantelpiece, a library desk, or a minimalist console table, contrasting effectively against contemporary neutral backgrounds.

Bronze should be maintained by gently dusting with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any abrasive cleaners, chemical polishes, or excessive moisture that might compromise the historic patina.
