Description

Although best known for his individual silhouettes of people, Edouart also cut family conversation pieces that often included the family dog. He kept scrapbooks in which he pasted his practice and experimental cuttings. These scrapbooks and his archive of work were mostly all lost to the sea when Edouart was shipwrecked off the coast of Guernsey in 1829. Some years ago a salvaged scrapbook came to light in a Parisian bookshop and this is the source of this unique cutting of a spaniel waiting for the next treat.

The silhouette is presented in a period giltwood frame and has a stamp of authenticity reverse.

Framed Size: 121 x 135mm

Provenance: The Artist's Scrapbook

Silhouette art gained immense popularity during the 18th and 19th centuries as an affordable alternative to painted miniatures, named after the French finance minister Etienne de Silhouette.

Traditional silhouettes were typically cut from black paper or card using scissors or specialized knives, then mounted on a contrasting white or pale background and housed in timber or brass frames.

Authentic pieces often exhibit hand-cut edges with subtle irregularities, period-appropriate framing materials such as reverse-painted glass or original gilt wood, and natural paper ageing characteristics.

Antique silhouettes work well when grouped in gallery walls alongside modern abstract art, or hung individually in narrow wall spaces and alcoves to add historical depth and graphic contrast.

Paper silhouettes should be displayed away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and yellowing, and maintained in stable humidity conditions behind conservation-grade glass.
