Description

Newlyn Copper Hot Water Jug with Cormorant and John Dory Decoration, c.1905

For sale is an exceptionally attractive Newlyn copper hot water jug, dating to around 1905. Of tapered square form, the jug is beautifully decorated on one side with a cormorant standing on a rock, a fish clasped in its bill, and on the front with a stylised John Dory fish.

The jug remains in excellent condition, retaining its original split cane wickerwork around the strap handle, which is also in superb order. The base is clearly stamped Newlyn.

Dimensions: approximately 20.5 cm in height and 14 cm across from the tip of the spout to the edge of the handle.

An outstanding example of Newlyn copper from the Arts and Crafts period — both decorative and highly collectible.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Newlyn Industrial Class was established in Cornwall in the late 19th century as part of the Arts and Crafts movement, teaching metalworking skills to local fishermen to provide alternative income.

Pieces were typically hand-hammered from sheet copper using the repousse technique, where designs were pushed out from the reverse side to create raised reliefs, often featuring marine motifs.

Authentic pieces frequently bear the impressed mark of Newlyn or initials of specific craftsmen, alongside distinct hand-beaten textures and coastal or marine iconography.

This piece can be displayed on a sideboard or mantelpiece to introduce warm metallic tones and historical texture to contemporary or transitional spaces.

Antique copper should be dusted gently with a soft cloth, avoiding aggressive commercial polishes that strip historical patina and oxidisation.
