Originating in France, the armoire developed from a utilitarian chest used for storing armour and weapons into an ornate, freestanding wardrobe utilised for garments and household linens by the nobility and affluent classes.

Traditional armoires are constructed using solid hardwoods and veneers such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often featuring hand-cut dovetail joints, pegged framing, and delicate marquetry or string inlay work.

Authentic period furniture typically displays signs of age such as hand-planed surfaces, irregular dovetailing, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and shrinkage cracks in the secondary woods rather than modern mechanical fastenings.

This piece can serve as a focal point in a modern bedroom to introduce warmth and texture, contrasting against neutral walls or acting as a freestanding storage solution in a spacious hallway.

Preserve antique wood by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and periodically applying microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the finish.
