This Georgian chest on chest belongs to the late 18th century and is constructed from mahogany, pine, and brass with a warm brown colour. The tall storage unit has an upper section with three small drawers above three long drawers, resting on a base with a secretaire drawer above three further long drawers, all fitted with brass swan-neck handles and key escutcheons. The woodwork displays flame mahogany veneers, ebony and boxwood inlay on the secretaire drawer front, a decorative blind-fretwork cornice along the top, and low bracket feet. Practical dimensions measure 204 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 61 cm deep. The substantial piece suits placement in a traditional bedroom, hallway, or landing for substantial wardrobe or linen storage.

A secretaire chest on chest, also known as a tallboy, is a two-part wooden cabinet featuring two stacked chests of drawers, where one drawer folds down to reveal a fitted writing desk interior. Popular during the 18th century in Georgian England, this design combined vertical storage with a compact home office workspace.

Georgian chests on chest were primarily constructed from solid mahogany or oak, often finished with flame mahogany veneers on the drawer fronts. Internal drawer linings were crafted from secondary timbers like pine or oak, complemented by hand-cast brass handles and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic 18th-century pieces display hand-sawn tool marks on the back panels, hand-cut dovetail joints of irregular width, and natural timber oxidisation on unvarnished surfaces. Additionally, the unit splits into two distinct sections to facilitate transport and shows historic hand-forged iron or brass hardware.

A tallboy provides architectural height and storage efficiency in a bedroom, study, or hallway. Complementing the dark timber with muted, neutral wall shades and contemporary artwork creates a refined contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the wood regularly with a dry, lint-free microfibre cloth and apply a thin coat of high-quality beeswax once or twice a year along the grain. Keep the piece away from direct radiator heat and strong sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage, veneer splitting, and colour bleaching.
