Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Layered watercolour washes and fine brushwork: skilled painting around the turn of the century.
Subject of a Mediterranean fisherman taking snuff: popular genre theme of the period.
Gentle mellowing across the paper surface: natural ageing of period watercolour.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This framed antique watercolour painting depicts an elderly bearded Neapolitan fisherman wearing a traditional brown cap, jacket, and blue neckerchief while holding a small snuff box. Dating from circa 1900 in a 19th Century Realism style, the artwork uses paper and watercolour within a double mount, enclosed behind glass in an ornate gold gilt wooden frame decorated with carved foliage. The composition shows warm brown tones in the clothing and cap contrasting with the gilt finish of the frame, displaying general wear and marks commensurate with age alongside a good colour and patina. Measuring 58 cm high, 48 cm wide and 2 cm deep, this character portrait brings historical charm to a gentleman's library or study. In a modern home, it suits placement above a sideboard, on a gallery wall, or as a focal point in a traditional living room or hallway.

FAQs

Nineteenth-century Italian portrait watercolours frequently featured regional character studies, depicting local figures such as fishermen or craftsmen with detailed realism and expressive brushwork.

These works were executed using water-soluble pigments on heavy paper rag, mounted within protective matting, and housed inside carved wooden frames coated in leaf gilt behind protective glass.

Authentic period watercolours display natural paper aging, subtle pigment settling, historic framing techniques, and age-consistent wear to the mount or gilded frame.

Hang the painting as a focal point above a console table or integrate it into a curated gallery wall alongside contemporary drawings and metallic accents to create visual interest.

Keep the artwork out of direct light and humid environments, ensure it remains sealed behind UV-filtering glass, and use acid-free backing materials to prevent discolouration.
