Description

A very fine Copeland coffee cup and saucer with stunning, ornate, raised and tooled gilt decoration of stylised floral garlands, cornucopias, ribbons and swags. Geometric borders and rims and the unusual looped handle with spiked spurs is also carefully picked out in gilt and the centre of the saucer has a superb raised star with intricate knotted design and tooled detailing. Factory stamp to the bases and pattern number painted in red D1610, c.1860.

The cup measures 6.8cm (2 11/16") high and 7cm (2 3/4") rim to rim and the saucer measures 12.3cm (4 7/8") wide.

In excellent condition: the saucer has a very fine short glaze line to the rim that cannot be seen from the front, and it still rings beautifully. No other faults or repairs and no discernible handling wear, the decoration is perfect.

Copeland porcelain, succeeding Spode in the mid-19th century, became renowned for producing high-quality ceramics featuring intricate hand-painted designs and luxurious gilding, catering to affluent Victorian households.

Pieces from this era were typically crafted from fine-paste porcelain or bone china, meticulously glazed, and decorated with hand-applied or tooled gold leaf gilding fired at high temperatures.

Authenticity is usually verified through specific impressed or printed manufacturer marks on the base, stylistic consistency with mid-19th-century design patterns, and the quality of the ceramic body and gilding.

Such decorative items can be displayed on open shelving, within a glass-fronted cabinet, or utilized as a refined accent piece on a mantelpiece to introduce historical texture.

Antique porcelain with gold gilding should always be hand-washed gently in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges, ultrasonic cleaners, and dishwashers.
