Description

Artist: Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775–1851)

Engraver: James Basire (1730–1802)

Title: South View of Christ Church, &c. from the Meadows

Date: circa 1799–1801

Medium: Original engraving on wove paper

Frame 41 x 51 cm Sheet size: Approx. 37 x 47 cm

Condition: Very good condition, with minor age toning and slight edge wear consistent with late-18th-century artwork.

Description & Notes

A fine and authentic late-18th-century copperplate engraving drawn by J.M.W. Turner and engraved by James Basire, best known for his mentorship of William Blake.

We understand this print forms part of Turner’s early Oxford Series, published for the Oxford Almanack around 1799–1801 and depicting the south view of Christ Church across the meadows.

Printed on period wove paper with a lightly raised plate surface and faint powdery intaglio residue typical of original impressions.

The composition and lettering correspond directly with the institutional examples held by Tate Britain (T05919) and the Yale Center for British Art (B1977.14.27042).

This is not a later reprint, but a genuine period engraving from the original copper plate — a historically significant early Turner collaboration with one of the great Georgian engravers.

Condition Report: Fair to good condition for its age. Light age toning and minor handling marks, but the image remains clear and sharp. Please see photographs for full details.

Authentic 18th-century engravings are characterised by plate marks pressed into laid or woven paper, distinct ink lines created by hand-carving metal plates, and often show signs of age-related toning or foxing.

These works were typically produced using copper plates inked by hand and pressed onto rag paper made from linen or cotton fibres, using presses operated manually.

Verification involves examining the paper texture under magnification for laid lines, checking for plate impressions, assessing ink consistency, and identifying watermarks specific to the period.

Antique framed prints add historical depth and academic character when hung against neutral or dark panelled walls, often paired with traditional lighting to highlight the monochromatic tones.

Preservation requires framing with acid-free materials, mounting away from direct sunlight to prevent fading, and maintaining stable indoor humidity levels to protect delicate paper.
